It is probably the result of hitting springtime again that I feel suddenly inspired to write more. (Well, that and scening on TIG woke up my SEEDfic muse, which is a little awkward since I think the moment has kind of passed for everyone else, but whatever.) Suddenly I have... ideas again! Holy shit.
Well, okay, a lot of these ideas I have had for quite a while and just not done much with them.
But anyway. With the signs of my inspiration renewing itself, it's about the time of year for me to organize a list of Fic Ideas I Plan To Write, in the hopes of actually getting around to some of them this time.
Ouran High School Host Club: Extremely belated Tamaki/Haruhi for
atrocity. It Is A Sekrit!
Gundam SEED:
"The Good Soldier" is actually written, but needs editing like whoa.
That One Fic that I don't have a title for, about Andy and Murrue after SEED (Destinyless AU FTW), and an expansion of a theme touched on in the giftfic I did for
annwyd about how, after Junius 7, Valentine's Day went from being a holiday for lovers to being a day for remembering the dead, and their particular mutual perspective on it, having both lost the people they loved to war and formed a relationship directly as a result of that, with the memories of Mwu and Aisha still very much a part of their lives, and the ways in which it only works because it's something they share instead of one of them having to compete with the memory of the other one's dead lover. I want to write this so much, augh.
Another as-yet-untitled fic about Andy and Murrue following SEED, which may or may not end up as part of the Valentine's one, involving the early development of their relationship when all the edges are still raw and they're struggling to cope. (And possibly a bit of very mild smut.)
A short Mwu/Murrue vignette to add to On the Longing For War and War's Ending, somewhere in the first scramble to get the Archangel's ragtag crew together, dealing with their first impressions of one another and the fact that, as far as I can tell from the timeline, Murrue does not manage to get proper medical attention for that shoulder wound until after Artemis.
A fic set during the Debris Belt stuff poking at the way most of the conversations Mwu and Murrue have seem to involve a lot more being communicated than just the stuff they are actually saying out loud.
"Acceptable Losses," Admiral Sutherland's perspective on Murrue and the Archangel, between the inquiry and the detonation of JOSH-A. I will probably not actually write this. But I do find something awfully intriguing about casting Murrue, and Mwu, and the Archangel, through the filter of his point of view, which takes everything that's so right about Murrue's particular brand of intuitive and conscientious leadership and makes it look like - what's that line from Buffy? - "fuzzy-minded liberal thinking that gets you eaten," and makes the partnership between Mwu and Murrue, which is beautiful because it makes them both more able to work together instead of less so and makes them both stronger, into 'he's an extremely gifted pilot, it's too bad he's thinking with the wrong head and has developed all these misguided protective urges for a set of pretty brown eyes and a nice rack.'
Legion of Superheroes: "Wasted Time" and "Ships That Don't Come In," two related fics featuring Dyrk Magz following Legion Worlds #3. I don't really have plots for either one of them, I just really want to write Dyrk fanfic. :( It's surprisingly difficult.
Final Fantasy VIII:
"Paved With Good Intentions," the uncharacteristically long and involved semi-AU in which Ellone, with Rinoa's help, actually succeeds in changing the past, resulting in a whole mess of fallout including Raine's life being saved and Squall having an actual sane upbringing as the son of Esthar's president, and meeting Rinoa via diplomatic overtures between Galbadia and Esthar, and everything going straight to hell because if Squall doesn't suffer, the world ends. Primary obstacle to getting it written: for one thing, I have to figure out what Galbadia and Esthar are politicking about. And for another, I have to figure out what happens after things start going down the toilet. The politics are the main problem, though.
An as-yet-untitled fic in which Something Happens To Rinoa and Squall starts turning into Ultimecia. There's a lot of stuff involved in this that I would still need to figure out in order to write it, but I still really want to anyway. This is my answer to that annoyingly popular theory that Ultimecia is the future Rinoa.
"Persistence of Memory," in which Squall, Irvine, and Selphie camp out outside of the Tomb of the Unknown King after completing the ingame mission there; Irvine explains why the Unknown King is unknown (as per the background information in the game menus: people believed it was bad luck to speak the names of the dead, or something) and subtly tries to poke Squall and Selphie into recognizing him, and Squall ponders which he thinks would be worse: to be dead and have people distorting your memory more and more as time went on until what was left didn't really resemble you any more, or to be forgotten and simply cease to exist. Primary obstacle to getting it done: Squall's always torturously complicated philosophies.
"The Find Out More About Zell Committee," an elaboration on a completely adorable little bit of optional dialogue in which the Library Committee (sans girl with pigtail) ambush Zell and quiz him about his likes and dislikes, with the clear intention of fixing him up with the girl with the pigtail. Why? Why not. Primary obstacle to getting it done: have to actually locate that piece of dialogue in the game again so that I can figure out where it lies in the game's timeline. Also, I'd have to name the girls, and I hate doing that.
"Legacy," a mostly pregame look at the possible origins of Squall naming his ring Griever, via a series of snapshots covering his relationship with Ellone as a child (in which she tells him stories about the lion in his ring, which I am choosing to assume is a keepsake from Raine's family) through the earlier stages of his Garden career, possibly bracketed by the battle with the Griever GF in the endgame. Primary obstacle to getting it done: see above for re: Squall's thought processes, plus more generally just getting around to it.
30kisses fic in which Squall's methods of expressing affection are Not Like Other People's, which may involve him frustrating Rinoa by not grokking the concept of giving one's girlfriend flowers until he finally figures out, if not the significance of the concept itself, then at least that it would please Rinoa, and responding by covertly having her room at garden completely filled with flowers and steadfastly refusing to make a public production out of it, or may involve my personal conceit regarding Squall's general distaste for physical contact and Rinoa's contemplation of how their relationship works as compared to what the girls she knows in Deling City would expect... or I may do one of each, just because.
Laguna and President Caraway meet at some kind of Garden function and discuss their respective children, edging awkwardly around the subject of Julia as they do so. Major obstacle here being I have no idea what they would talk about and I think I might suck at characterizing either one of them.
"Guardian," in which Bahamut noses around in Squall's head during the Deep Sea Deposit sidequest. Primary obstacle to getting it done: I only vaguely remember what I was planning for it at this point.
Untitled postgame campout comedy in which the PCs make s'mores. Primary obstacle: the summary given is pretty much the sum total of my concept for the fic, at the moment.
Untitled Centra Ruins/Odin sidequest fic, just because. Primary obstacle: have not figured out how to end it (unless I cliffhanger with OH SHIT, TONBERRY KING).
"After the Storm," which is written but which I continue to be highly dissatisfied with and would like to rework into Squall being Broken in the Training Center because that's what it's for.
Kingdom Hearts: "Lion Passant," a Leon character study with the conceit that he is a failed Keyblade bearer and that's how he knows so much about stuff in the games. I have no earthly idea how to do this one but I still really, really want to write it. :(
Weiss Kreuz:
Post-Gluhen Weiss Kreuz alternafic; Aya-chan hires amnesiac PI Yoji to find her brother, chaos ensues. Now if I could just figure out what kind of chaos, I'd be set!
A variation on the obnoxiously popular "a new Kritiker agent joins / starts working with Weiss" fic, in which it turns out that the new Kritiker agent is actually a spy for some enemy or other, but Weiss are wise to her because calico is a color, not a breed, morons.
"Grau," a Weiss Kreuz / Noir crossover which I will probably never write, but the concept of Yoji interacting with Mireille and Aya interacting with Kirika pleases me anyhow.
Also, I have an actual original fic idea! (How original is debatable; currently it's owing rather a lot to Final Fantasy. But.) It primarily involves a setting in which human reincarnation is proven fact, and one's past lives resonate into one's present life in the form of carried-over memories and cycles that keep repeating until one Gets It Right, until finally one gets it all right and ascends to paradise or Nirvana or whatever. In this setting there is also a non-human race which does not reincarnate because they don't naturally die, although they can be killed; they live agelessly until they perfect themselves in their own lifetime, and then they ascend directly without dying. With a lot of noonah about how those two systems would affect their respective cultures; for humans, death would not be so big a deal, but for the non-human race death would be unnatural and scary and murder would be the Great Sin You Never, Ever Commit.
One of the two main characters is a girl who is a crossbreed between the two races, a thing which is a) really rare both due to cultural taboos and due to the incredibly low birthrate of the non-reincarnating race (because it would have to be, if they live long enough to achieve perfection in their own lifetimes, otherwise they'd be all over the place), and b) problematic because while crossbreeds live longer than humans, they do age to death before they can achieve ascension - and nobody knows if they reincarnate, because they're so rare it mostly doesn't come up. Thus the cultural taboos, because nobody knows if a crossbreed actually even has a soul. This character's mother was human and died as a result of complications in the pregnancy thanks to the merging of species; she was raised either by her father or by relations on her father's side, and was pushed to be composed and dignified and serene, but eventually struck out her own to make her way for herself. Visually I kind of think she resembles Alice Elliott from Shadow Hearts, a little bit.
The other major character was human - human nobility, in fact - but political negotiations he was involved in to keep his home country from getting swallowed whole by a large encroaching empire went Horribly Wrong thanks to someone he'd trusted, and he reacted badly and made things even worse and nearly got killed. To get the chance to fix it and get revenge, he sacrificed all his future reincarnations in order to keep on living, so now he also doesn't really age, and is pretty sure he hasn't got a soul any more, but unlike the female character, he doesn't mind so much because he's got other things to preoccupy him. He's also pretty much an enormous jerk, although basically a decent guy underneath it. And he may be missing an arm, because... I don't know why I'm finding that intriguing lately.
The plot, such as it is so far, involves getting to the bottom of what went so wrong with those negotations, and most likely it will turn out that themagicite materia nethicite semimagical crystals which are the source of the empire's prosperity and success are actually refined from human souls, which then obviously don't get reincarnated, which is really bad. MAGICITE IS MADE OF PEOPLE. So naturally the empire is going to have to be stopped, or at least kicked out of the guy's home country which they are currently occupying. I have not yet worked out how the two main characters end up teaming up to do this, but when the story opens the girl will actually be working as a secretary/sekrit bodyguard for someone in the empire, and I kind of want to have the empire have floating sky cities both because sky cities are awesome and because it would give me the opportunity to have the two lead characters totally fall off one.
Is it too painfully obvious that I have been playing FFXII a lot recently?
I will probably continue to simmer this idea until November and then try to make a great big blaze of... something... with it for NaNoWriMo. There are still a lot of details to work out.
